The Red Queen's Race
I set a goal in a new field. I bloodied my hands and knees to reach it.
The second goal is taking just as long as the first
despite my feet covering more in less.
My feet barely touch the ground anymore,
yet the ETA does not budge between goals.
Maybe my feet aren't fast enough.
What once took hours now takes minutes.
Minutes become seconds.
Wheels have taken the place of my feet.
Why was I so slow before?
Was I just that incompetent?
Does any goal from before matter?
Not now.
The ETA remains fixed.
I keep getting faster.
Jets roar to life.
Seconds become fractions.
People keep saying
"you're moving so fast!"
Pfft.
Why is the ETA frozen?
I must run twice as fast
to get where I am meant to go.
I'm not an expert,
they're so far ahead.
I see a newbie
with bloodied knees
reaching for a goal.
I scoff.
Moving like that,
you must not really want it.
Rockets.
Fractions are instants.
Not fast enough.
Not yet.
I'm so behind.
